The First Episode

Categories 2018

We have a tradition here.

When we start to watch a new movie on Netflix or Amazon or whatever, I always want to quit halfway through and I say “ I dunno BW about this – what else do we have?” and every time BW makes me stick with it and then by the 2nd or sometimes third episode I’m fully hooked and can’t stop watching.

I’ve done this with other projects too. Take this site for example – I have started and then ultimately quit writing here more than once and if I look back I wish I had stuck with it.

I wonder if the fact that my need for the TV show to grab me fully in the first 15 minutes due to my interest in technology and the internet and that stuff moves so fast in these spheres that there’s always something new?

Or maybe that when it comes to the streaming services themselves. There’s just too much stuff and so little time? I’ve yet to make it all the way through breaking bad and there’s so much other stuff to watch on my saved lists that it’s overwhelming. There’s too much choice now.

Add to the fact that these shows are not just one episode – or even just an hour and a half movie – but some are entire series with 18 one hour episodes in the que. We don’t watch every day so a season’s worth can take us upwards of 2 months or longer to slog through.

Maybe that’s why I’m so reluctant to start a new show because with the way we watch now there’s so much time invested in the watching now. Back in the the pre-streaming era it was easier. You were only out a half an hour if you didn’t like it.

As a Canadian sometimes we didn’t have much choice other than CBC so you didn’t ahve much programming to choose from: hockey or hockey. Or even with regular cable, an episode of Happy Days was 30 minutes at most and the commercials mean you even had time to pee or get a snack.

Maybe I’m just being to fussy about my time and what I watch but sometimes it seemed like less choice was easier.

Your Order Has Shipped

Categories 2018

Here’s one I haven’t done before. Apparently I ordered some stuff on Amazon while putting my phone back in my pocket.

As almost every human on the planet does these days – the first thing I do is check the phone. Usually, it’s the stupid alarm going off and maybe some eBay auctions ending I have been watching.

But this morning it was the little Amazon shopping cart icon in my notification tray. Funny, I thought – I didn’t order anything.

Well, it seems I had. Yesterday afternoon I was wondering how I was going to mount my stupidly large computer monitor to my new $25.00 desk so I was shopping for monitor stands and mounts.

I had the stuff in my shopping cart to see what the total would be. I decided against placing the order and put my phone back in my pocket.

Well, somehow the order got placed and my order is on my way. Great.

It was only $40.00 but that’s not the point. It was also mortgage day and as BW is in charge of the finances I’m always afraid the mortgage payment is going to bounce because I stopped at Starbucks.

Thankfully this month payday and mortgage day happened on the same day and pa day beat mortgage day to the bank so crisis averted.

I was able to cancel the order for half the stuff, but I have a 100×200 VESA Monitor mount coming tomorrow, because: prime.

I know that now I am an American I am supposed to support the economy and work all the time and buy all the things but shopping in your pocket is a new one for me.

I’m just happy I didn’t have an expensive Apple product in my cart that’s now on the way. BW would have killed me.

The $25.00 Desk

Categories 2018

I had some time to kill on my phone this morning as I had an early doctor’s appt but I did not start working until 9. So I went for coffee and surfed craigslist. And I found a desk. For $25.00!

It came from a law firm that was closing and I thought for sure it was scam or the price was wrong but it turns out it was indeed just twenty five bucks so I said I will take it.

It’s a cubicle desk, so it comes with those fabric walls, that we so love. I got the last one, so it’s bit of a beater but it works and I managed to get it assembled without a trip to the emerg which is kind of amazing.

As I was putting it together I realized that instead of making it normal height I could make it a standing desk and gave that a try. If I don’t like it, I can always lower the top.

To quote my wife: “This is ridiculous. Put it at a normal height and sit down” .

It’s hard to see in the photos but I have tucked my old desk under this one so if I want to I can just pull the desk out a bit and pull up a chair.

I change my office around on the hour it seems trying to find the correct feng shui but it’s a pretty cheap desk and night’s entertainment getting it all plugged in and running.

The Good Pie

Categories 2018

We have a pie in the freezer. Big surprise.

BW and I have different opinions one when we should eat said pie. For BW, any time she thinks to put it in the oven is a good time for pie.

But for me as much as I like pie I was saving this pie. For what, I’m not sure. It was in the freezer so I am sure pies do expire even frozen but I was kind of saving it for rainy day. It’s become my ‘just in case’ pie.

I thought we would have it for some special occasion, or when it’s really stormy out and the schools are closed and we all are home in our PJ’s.

But tonight, BW decided that tonight is pie night. Tonight is good enough. No saving of the pie she tells me.

But then I got to thinking that I do this with a lot of things other than pie. I tend to save stuff for later – just in case.

Take now for example – I’m using the laptop with the crappy keyboard that has a few scratches and scuffs. I have a better one that is so nice I’m also afraid to use it. I’m saving it. For what – I am not so sure.

Clothes are the same too. I bought a sweater on sale at Target for eight bucks. I haven’t worn it yet because I’m saving it. Again, for what I am not sure.

It’s an eight dollar shirt. My lunch today cost more. If I was to spill on this shirt it would not be a loss at all.

BW, on the other hand is completely different. She’s has a more c’est la vie attitude when it comes to stuff. “Stuff gets used” she says.

I’m always waiting for some event with unicorns and angels singing before I will wear my new shirt or eat my saved pie.

I sure hope I don’t spill pie on my shirt. I don’t think I could handle it.

The Red Couch

Categories 2018

For more than an year know, BW has been asking me to move my red couch from my bachelor days that’s been sitting in the basement since I got here – to her office at work.

I’ve been blowing this task off for some time for a few reasons: the first is I like that couch. That couch and I have a history. But then I realized it’s just a crappy couch from IKEA so whatever. I need to get over it.

The excuse I have been using for YEARS is that it’s too big and for a long time, BW bought my excuse. But when the topic came up this time, I actually went out to the Honda and measured. It should fit.

and spoiler alert: it does. There goes my excuse.

BW and I managed to wrangle it out of the basement into the car and then out of the car and into her office.

We could not have done this without Amanda’s hand cart. Who is Amanda you ask? Read on dear reader…

Years back, my Dad (Hi Dad!) was following a truck and this hand cart fell out of it. So Dad stopped on the side of the road and picked up Amanda’s Cart and now it’s the family cart. I guess I was the last to move with this cart and so now it’s here in the good ol US of A.

We know it’s Amanda’s Cart because on the back of it is written:

Amanda’s – Do not move or I will cut your…

Amanda doesn’t sound very nice.

But the good news is that I have dodged this fate for another day because BW has a red leather couch in her office and I have a happy wife.

Amanda? She’s still looking for her cart.

You Have My Vote

Categories 2018

BW is jealous. I got all the mail today.

Boy had I known you would have received all these nice congratulatory cards when you become a US citizen I would have done it earlier. 🙂

I got not one, but two cards today in the mail complimenting me on my new status here in the US.

I won’t share the messages, but I will share that both cards encouraged me to vote. I have a say now (Well, at least outside of the house) so I do intend to vote. I haven’t registered yet but that’s because they had a line at the ceremony and we decided to book it out of there and go have a celebratory coffee instead.

Back to the Cards:

This is a big deal. Both my wife and MIL posted on facebook on the big day and word travels fast so I am sure the word got out but it’s one thing to hit a ‘like’ button and forget about itand it’s another to make the effort to find a card, stamp and write a note and mail it.

This means a lot. Thank You. 🙂

Call Me Mr. Plow

Categories 2018

I guess it had to happen eventually.

Because we have a pretty big driveway, we pay a “snow plow guy” to come plow our driveway out after the storms each winter.

Every fall we send him a check and every fall he comes and stick little sticks in the ground so he can see where the driveway is when it’s buried under a foot or so of snow.

He does a good job with these. This year, they were white plastic conduit that the ends painted bright orange so that nobody will back into them when they back their car out of the driveway.

And every year it doesn’t matter what color they are – somebody always backs up over one.

This year it was my turn.

After realizing that I had backed over the stupid thing I pulled forward and popped out to take a look and I could see that the stick/post was sticking out from under the car. “No problem” I thought – I will just pull and the stick will come out and I will be on my way.

It seems that by pulling the car forward, I managed to jam this stupid stick so far up the rear end of the car it was never coming out.

I managed to get most of the stick out, but the little orange end was still stuck way up there.

Not much I could do at this point so I just got in my car and drove to work.

When I got to work I crawled under and the little orange end had fallen out. There – problem solved – right?

Now I have a squeaky rear end ( the car, not me) but I am not sure if this sound was there before this incident or if this is a result of my adventure.

I’m tempted to just turn up the radio because it’s a 10 year old car and all older cars squeek but I will probably end taking it into the shop soon just to be sure.

When I texted BW this morning I backed into the post her reply was:

At least I didn’t take out the mailbox.

Respect the Wonder Woman

Categories 2018

It’s kind of amazing that I keep on finding topics to blog about day in and day out, but then again – I am married to BW.

Take today for instance:

We had an Amazon order arrive at the door with just some random stuff we needed like carpet tape, dental floss, yerba mate, a book…all stuff we just needed in some fashion or other.

Oh! and – A wonder woman doll.

I asked BW – what the heck? And she says “ that I should never mind and it’s for a craft project and that I said she needed to get a hobby and she did so back off! “

Okay, then…

“Also – it was a warehouse deal!” she told me .

Got it.

“Respect the Wonder Woman!!!” BW said as she propped her up on the shelf and left the room.

Just when you think that this will be yet another normal day…

Maybe this is the new normal, I dunno. But I do know one woman I respect. 🙂

I wonder about her sometimes but that’s a whole other post. 🙂

PS> I still have no idea why we need this doll. Stay tuned, I am sure.

The Cardboard Box Part III

Categories 2018

I didn’t really think I would be writing about BW’s cardboard box again, but here I am.

See that blank space under the sign where the box is supposed to go?

The box was there when BW left work.

And then when she came back today it was gone.

It turns out the cleaning staff took and then recycled her $100 recycling box. Essentially it went into the black hole of recycling boxes.

This is not good. Because: $100. That’s a lot of pies.

BW went and found the sanitation people and it turns out that yes, the box got recycled and yes it’s now cut up into tiny pieces. And yes, she’s hosed.

BW did manage to find the part of the box with the pre-paid fedex return sticker on it and the plastic bag that was in the garbage and with some tape and markers managed to make a new box so she can continue her recycling hobby.

All this to save candy wrappers from the landfill. Next time you think about tossing that gum wrapper think about all the hard work BW is doing to try and save the little fellas.

I laughed and and laughed today when BW told me this story because I thought something like this might happen, and sure enough it did.

I’m hoping I don’t have to write about this box again, but with BW – you just never know. 🙂

Mr. American Pie

Categories 2018

Today was a pretty big day for me. I became a US citizen.

A few things about the photo above:

  1. I have no idea who the guy behind me was. (kidding! He was the judge)
  2. This was the first time I have worn a tie in over a year

Also, I was given an naturalization certificate. I have proof. I didn’t just make this up.

BW could not make it to the event today due to work, so my MIL drove across the state of New York to watch yours truly take his oath because – well, I’m family now (and have been for a while) .

It was a very, very nice venue for such an event as it was held at the Theodore Roosevelt Inauguration Site which is not the norm so not only was it a special event but it was at a special venue too – just one day past President’s day (and family day back in the old country)

Today 31 people like myself became US citizens from 18 countries.

There was a play about the inauguration, as well as a barbershop quartet that sang the national anthem. This was not what was expected. The judge was very nice and even allowed us for a re-shoot so we could get a few more pictures after the ceremony.

The form said no mobile phones so we left them in the car, but lots and lots had phones and I think that I would have more photos rather than have to show how to use a camera. But we got a few good ones and they are all the same save for one of me at the stage to collect my certificate.

I have to tell you that I was getting a little nervous and thought I was forgotten about because it seemed like they called everybody but me but the worry was all for naught because I was called up and handed the certificate.

I have to share that it was kind of scary handing over my green card for the last time as it took me so much to move here and get it and then give it away. The USCIS representative joked about this when she was talking about what to do when you get the certificate, etc so it seems this is a common thing and I’m not the only neurotic one. 🙂

This was a team effort. I might have been the one with certificate in my hand but I would not be here without the Support of both BW’s and my families and friends that helped in so many different ways. Also, I would like to thank the Academy…..

Of course, this would not be a blog post without some mention of pie, but I hate to disappoint. Considering that the last time I got handed a certificate of any kind was over 25 years ago you would think that pie would be on the menu right?

We did go out for a nice dinner at Dick and Jenny’s and then we split some cheesecake.

So it’s kind of like pie. Regardless it was still delicious.

Lastly, the best part is that I am done with the immigration system. No more forms to fill. No more fingerprinting.

I remember when BW and I were still dating and we talked about how it would take about five years or more to get here and it seemed soooo long and far away – if not impossible to actually get to the citizenship step, but here I am.

And I have to tell you I kind of like my new home. 🙂
