The Breakfast Club
Sometimes bravery is as simple as getting breakfast
We are lucky to have the school district where both breakfast and lunches are free. Yes, free. In addition to the price being right it also means we don't have to make her lunch either in the early morning (which would never happen) or in the evening after she goes to bed (also, iffy)
This is a big plus - this not having to create the perfect little bento box to compete with all the other mommy bloggers. I have no desire to create something like this every day
What we have been doing is feeding her breakfast here before she gets on the bus because:
- We don't want her to go to school hungry. No child should have to do this.
- She was too afraid to go get the free breakfast at school.
Fear of the unknown is real folks. It doesn't matter if you're young or old it's much easier to just go with the status quo than to try something new. So up until now she would have breakfast at home and then when it was time for lunch she would go without issue because they would all go as a class and it was more familiar because she was with her homies
But to get off the bus and then walk to the cafeteria by yourself for breakfast? When you're five? No way.
But. Today was different
Today was the day she decided to be brave and to go to the cafeteria all by herself. (actually, I am unsure of the logistics of breakfast. she may have had some direction) and get some of that sweet free breakfast.
That's my girl!
Also, they had fruit loops. That helped. Sugar wins every time.
When I got home I got told all about it and how an older girl (grade 1) who was "nice, but I don't know her name" showed her how to get breakfast and then sat beside her. I got told all about the size of the cereal boxes and the different flavors.
She also stated that they had pop tarts there but she thought she might be in trouble so she stuck with the cereal.
Sweetheart, go ahead and get a pop-tart tomorrow. You earned it today. Good Job!
Until next time,
TH and Co.
