  1. Autism Month

There’s more to this month than the Easter Bunny.

make a poster about autism and make it colorful

We have a new evening routine where we fire up my phone and have AI make us silly pictures. It’s a silly and fun way to get her to wind down and go to bed.1 Usually it’s something silly like this:

make photo of a monkey riding a bicycle in the rain.

But today it’s all about autism at her school - this week actually and today she was advised to dress up in either bright colors or wear something with a message.

She chose to break all the rules and could not decide so she wore not one, not two but three different shirts to school today. One over the other. She came home with just two and I have no idea where the third is, probably still at school.

She’s been learning about autism and that’s good because despite what the current administration thinks- it’s okay to be different. It’s okay to be accepting and kind to others.

If it takes 3 shirts or a funny hat or whatever else the school does to make this a fun learning experience, I am all for it.

I’m proud of her that she’s paying attention at school and that the school is teaching this and that she is learning that April is not just about the Easter Bunny.

    The Puzzle

Tonight after dinner, the child wanted to play a puzzle. She brought it over to me but I was busy putting some stuff away and BW was well enough to sit at the table again after her surgery so I asked both of them to play together.

They did and without complaint, which was odd, but - I ran with it.

I had to laugh when she piped up when she was cleaning up the puzzle:

This is fun! It really beats up my boredom!

And on that note, I really hope I have beat up your boredom tonight.

  2. What Do I Want?

For the clock to slow down a bit, would be nice.

In some ways I want the clock to fast forward a bit - and make it bedtime so I can end the day and just get off the internet and go to bed. Because: I am so tired.

In other ways I wouldn’t mind if the clock slowed down a bit because time is going by pretty quick here-quicker than I would like.

Tonight I was walking by her bedroom thinking she would be asleep but then she popped her head up and with a pretty little face that was half asleep said to me:

“Hi Dad. What do you want?”

I didn’t want anything really, other than to check on her that she was okay and asleep (she wasn’t- but she was well on her way.) I also told her I just came to see her because she’s growing up too fast for me and the “back in the day” photos we search through on my phone keep going further back every day we look at these,

Before I know it the tickle fights will be gone and she’s already caught on to my “look over there” tricks. She knows better now. I’m doomed.

So that’s what I want: for time to stop just for bit so I can take this moment and appreciate today. Tonight we made some silly images with AI and had an absolute blast doing it.

“Make an image with SpongeBob, Patrick and Gary riding a motorcycle”

Now, go to bed. It’s a school night.

    “Okay”.

  3. The Fib

This is a story about telling stories.

Photo by Elena Mozhvilo on Unsplash

We’re having a problem with lies here. Not BIG lies like she snuck out of the house and didn’t say but more on the lines of saying “yes” when asked if she brushed her teeth.

This is called: Testing Your Dad

She’s a horrible liar. Her face goes bright red, she gets this goofy look on her face and then right to my face she lies to me.

Earlier this morning I asked her if she brushed her teeth.

She peers her eyes over the tablet she was watching and looks me right in the eye and tells me “yes”.

    LIAR!, I exclaim.

Then I ask if she would like to speak the whole truth, the simple truth. And then she caves and confesses that no teeth got brushed.

It’s not that she lies that bugs me, it’s the fact that she’s the AGE to lie that I don’t like. My cute little two year old would not lie to me, but now that she’s six she’s flat out fibbing and it’s only going to get worse.

Later today when she was in the bath, I told her to use soap and then when I asked later, the soap was in the exact same spot as it had been and she flat out lied again and told her I knew she was lying.

“How did you know!?” She asked in disbelief.

“Because I know everything” I told her 1

    I’m your Dad.

  4. Best Day Ever

It is when it includes free cupcakes, chocolate milk and bouncy houses.

I bet BW isn’t thinking it’s the best day ever. She’s home from the hospital though so that’s a very good thing. Now all it takes is time and some painkillers for a bit and she’ll be back in no time.

After I got BW home in bed and her medication sorted out the child and I went to PlayU, which I can’t really figure out what it is. It’s connected directly to Niagara Fun Park, which I have written about before:

This is an odd place. It’s got a few bouncy houses and some small rooms that glow in the dark etc, and it’s as if they are trying to be all the things to everybody because besides birthday parties and bouncy houses they all have batting cages and what look to be soccer fields. It’s an odd layout to me. How do you mix birthday cakes and batting cages?

Anyway, check it out yourself: Play University

We know about this place because a few weeks back she had her very first school field trip into another city and they went here. I think it may have been more fun for her that day as she was with 20 of her friends all the same age and size and probably they had the place to themselves.

Today, being a Saturday was not the same. I took her obviously, but the bouncy houses were full of a birthday party of 12 year old boys and their play was just a little too rough and tumble for her. They should have block off the birthday party for the 12 year olds I think as she was too afraid to really play without getting hurt.

That said, kudos to one kid for moving out of the way to have a turn and then shouting down below to his buddies to watch it as my little one was coming down the slide. Good on you, young man.

Of course all this didn’t matter to her. She bounced, sang and made a bed out of foam yoga blocks and sung a concert where I am sure the only one listening to her sing was the two of us.

She was in there for an hour and a half and I think that was enough.

On the way home we stopped at the grocery store to pick up some flowers for mommy and we were looking for a treat for her as a reward for being so good this past week (and lately overall).

As were were debating the sweet vs salty options the sweet presented in my favorite form: free! They were handing out perfect sized little chocolate muffins and she was thrilled!

“Well, that solves the snack problem”, she told me.

    Indeed it does.

While slurping on a chocolate milk, she told me:

OMG this is the best chocolate milk I ever had! Best day ever.

I don’t know about that, but it was a pretty good day or at least it ended a lot better for all of us than when the day started.

And around here, we call that a win.

  5. The Wait

When someone you love is sick, you wait.

You wait for them to get better. You wait with them in the emergency room.

You wait in the room with them for the doctors and nurses to ask question after question.

You wait for the meds to kick in

You wait in the “Surgical Waiting Room”

    You wait in the car

    You wait to sleep

    You wait to shower

You wait to eat well again

You wait to see your child because a hospital waiting room is for no place for kids.

You wait for the “she’s out of surgery” notification on your phone to pop up.

You wait for the robot assisted surgery to be finished.

You wait for the all clear and the discharge.

You wait for them to heal and feel better

You wait because you are a partner.

    You wait.
