  1. No Dessert Thursday

It started almost immediately after she came in the house from school. I do not know what was going on, but she’s just been a little…well, you know. Not a well-behaved child, that’s for sure.

The first struggle was trying to take her sling off of all things. When she came in the house. You would think that we were trying to get her to put it on, but nope. She went to the Doctor’s yesterday, and she’s allowed to take it off when she’s home. We still have a few weeks of healing on that arm to go and it wasn’t helping things by fighting us to keep it on.

She was then asked to feed the dog because it’s her job.

    “No”

“I’m sorry, what did you say? I asked

She proceeded to protest. I explained to her (read: idle threats) that mommy has the best-est biggest event planed for Sunday for the 3 of us, but if she keeps being like the little turd she currently is then we can give her tickets to her friends so they can go.

    That didn’t work.

“Go to your room”, I said.

She figured out that I meant business and so made a big fuss of feeding the dog full of drama and emotion. The dog didn’t care how the food happened as long as it did.

Then I told her to go to her room. She thought she was golden because she fed the dog, but nope – that doesn’t reset the clock. You still misbehaved – You even fed the dog with an attitude.

    Cue the screaming.

I finally get her to her room and then more screaming and more and more and more. You get the idea.

Finally, she settles down and she wants to play. Nope, not until she apologizes, I explain. Apologies happen and are accepted.

Then just as we were sitting down to dinner, her friend up the street came to the door and wanted to play. Bad timing, she’s just eating dinner.

Dinner was pretty uneventful. She was warned it was no dessert Thursday so that was easier than I expected. She even ate most of her dinner. There’s hope.

After dinner, she was just finishing the last bite, and her friend was at the door again wanting to play. BW answered the door and told the neighbor kid that the child could not come out because she was misbehaving.

    OMG YOU GUYS.

She went ballistic when she heard that. I guess in her mind we were all good but nope, you don’t get to stomp and scream and then expect to go out and play. That’s not how it works.

I’ve never seen anybody get so red. I thought she was going to explode.

Tantrum mode has been activated. Holy.

Finally, I got her to settle down so she could breathe again and then by then she’s absolutely exhausted. This works out great, because: bedtime!

She brushed her teeth and then I rubbed her back a bit while she was in bed and she’s out before 6pm. I’m parent of the year!

She came a few times wanting this and that and there was some protest about wanting a night light on but as I write this I am doing so uninterrupted, so I am calling that a win for today.

  2. A Story about Colors and Couture

It’s been a few days since our great weekend of breaking all the rules and boy are we all hung over. We are both too old and too young at the same time for this. Bedtime cannot come soon enough for all of us tonight.

We just can’t seem to get back on our A game. We’re all tired, exhausted or hung over. We have stayed up too late, eaten too much junk food and sweets and now we’re paying for it. We are not McLovin’ it.

I am hoping tonight that we will all get a good night’s sleep and a full reset with happier demeanor as a result.

Tonight’s episode is brought to you by Crayola. We opened new crayons tonight which is always a good thing here as we are in full coloring mode here. If there’s some lines in the house they must be colored in. Under normal circumstances, this would be okay but she still has one arm that fully functions…so we’re still a little limited in our coloring.

We’re also having a bit of a problem of listening. It’s like having a teenager in the house. All the instructions get ignored and it’s driving us crazy. So, tonight she got a taste of the results of not listening.

She had a bath, and I laid out her pajamas for her to put on. She protested of course and wanted to wear the brand new pair of pajamas. I said no, she can wear last night’s as they are fine and we don’t need a new pair of PJ’s every night.

The deal was if she put on her PJ’s and came down we would look through the new highlights magazine she got in the mail. Sounds easy, yes?

She came down all proud of herself. She did have PJ’s on, but not the ones she was told to put on – but the new ones. Essentially I got ignored and she did her own thing. If a five-year old can flip you the bird – consider me flipped.

She came down so proud and was ready to read her magazine but she wasn’t expecting my reaction: I told her she didn’t listen and now we won’t be able to read the magazine because she didn’t listen to me.

Cue the tears. I gotta tell you folks and BW will attest to this: I am the world’s biggest sucker for those tears. But tonight I was strong and held my own and repeated the deal. Put on the PJ’s I asked you to and we can read the magazine. And wonder of wonders, she went back upstairs and put on the right PJ’s as instructed. You never know what you’re gonna get

It’s relatively early here and bedtime was a breeze as she was SO exhausted she didn’t even want to be read a bedtime story. I sat with her for a minute and then closed the door behind me and I haven’t heard a peep since.

  3. You Want Fries with That?

What would we do without Melissa and Doug?

Oh, I know. We would have a lot less crap in the house. It’s not the stuff, it’s the fact that it’s a set. When the toy is just for an example; a ball – you have the ball and that’s it. With toys that are kits you have pieces. Want to know what gets lost at our house?

    You got it. Pieces.

This of course would be a lot easier without the dog but every time I ask about the dog leaving us, I get a hard NO. Some pieces might still be around if we were dog less, but so it goes.

This latest addition to our house is this Melissa and Doug Diner Kit that has 41 pieces! Let me say that again: forty-one pieces. You try bending down 41 times and picking up the pieces and see how you like it. They never tell you this on the listing for it on Amazon. They make it seem as having 41 pieces is a good thing. Oh, look at this realistic diner kit with 41 pieces, It’s so realistic! Isn’t the little coffee pot so cute!

Maybe I’m going to the wrong diners over the years but in real life I never come into contact with 41 pieces.

    Melissa and Doug Diner Kit

All 41 pieces in all their glory

    Buy Yours Today!

At a real diner I get a napkin, knife and fork and a plate. Add a coffee cup, some juice and some jam for my toast and I’m still under 10 items in the real world. If I am really lucky, i might get offered a refill, but that doesn’t count because I would be reusing the cup. This just isn’t realistic at all.

We like the Melissa and Doug stuff, we do – until we lose the stuff. Then you have to pretend that the missing piece never existed OR you just toss out the entire kit and hope the child doesn’t notice. A hot dog bun without the dog doesn’t get ordered at any diner, real or otherwise.

Of course this is the new toy into the house thanks to Thanksgiving as an excuse to gift the child to death. (She also got pajamas which are much more practical) and so as soon as the child sees a victim walk by in the living room, she attacks from behind the couch and asks the deadly question: Can you play with me?

Of course I can! I squeal with delight as I frantically scan and count the area where she has all the stuff laid out for display: (I’m not seeing 41 pieces here)

I didn’t see avocado toast on the menu.

She took my order: remember, only one thing at a time. Told me to sit down and she would ring the bell when it’s ready.

    Bing! Waffles Up!

The waffles came delivered by the most beautiful waitress I have ever seen

I did have to stiff her a bit on the tip because her busboy (aka: the dog) ate one of the play dollars already.

That leaves us with 40 pieces left…

    Keep dining,

  4. Thankful

Its the eve of Canadian Thanksgiving as I write this, and as one does they stop and reflect on what they’re thankful for. Here’s mine:

    1. I’m thankful that I survived 3 days alone with my daughter. I don’t think I could have done it if it weren’t for the McDonald’s Happy Meal and Paw Patrol.
    2. I’m thankful my wife is back. I will be quietly uber-ing away when she has to deal with the over-tired and over-stimulated 5 year old in the morning.
    3. I’m thankful I want for nothing. Sure there’s always a new gadget I am eyeing but we really want for nothing. Well, except a dishwasher that would work reliably but I am probably asking a lot here
    4. I’m thankful for pie. So is Target when I have to go shopping for bigger pants.
    5. I’m thankful my wife’s employer picks up the bill when my 5 year old falls off the slide and needs medical attention. Many in this country are not so lucky and get saddled with medical debt.
    6. I’m thankful that my daughter gets a free lunch and breakfast every day at school. No kid should have to be hungry while learning.
    7. I’m thankful that we’re all healthy and happy.
    8. I’m thankful for all my readers – all 19 of you.

    Give thanks and eat pie,

    TH and Co.

  5. A Lazy Sunday

I hadn’t really planned on it being so quiet here but I guess when it comes to breaking all the rules – there are no rules.

The plan was to take her out to Target and get her some pants because I don’t know what happened to her dresser drawer but it’s a disaster area and all I can find are short and mismatched socks.

In fact she was in shorts today. I figured we would get her into pants eventually but I guess pants are overrated here and not needed.

We didn’t get to Target and we didn’t have to change pants. What we did do was paint. I resisted the paint at first after yesterday where I had to clean up the paint afterwards but I caved and let her paint. She happily painted for a good hour. She told me she wanted to be an artist when she grows up and not a police officer. Both are not the dream careers for my little one but hey, who am I to tell her what to do?

What she did do was test me. She knows I’m more of a pushover than Mom but there’s a limit I won’t even cross. She wanted pancakes for cereal again and she wanted to go to the mall and get cotton candy.

Ha! Yeah, No. Don’t push your luck princess. I do have to give her kudos for trying. I told her we’ve already broken a lot of rules and we’re having more sweets tonight with ice cream and then we’re going to Canada to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving and I bet there will be more treats there too.

So, we chilled. She fired up her Amazon tablet (best $75 spent, folks) and I closed my eyes to see what happened and lo and behold I ended up napping. I figured she would get hungry or want something and wake me up so the nap wouldn’t be too long but she was still glued to the tablet when I woke up.

I guess this is good. I now know that she won’t burn down the house by getting into trouble because that would require putting down the tablet, and that doesn’t happen. Ever.

I made dinner with a little help from Blue Apron and she ate it for the most part. I did have to rinse off the shrimp with some water as she was not keen on the honey glaze but otherwise no great issues.

For dessert we shared more of the Panda Paw ice cream and when I found a Panda Paw in mine, I handed it over. I want to remember this because I had more fun sharing the panda paw than I would ever have eating it. “oooh, thanks Dad”

The bath and PJ routine went well too so maybe we both needed a day to recharge because breaking all the rules is hard. There’s a lot of rules to break!

Mommy comes home tomorrow though so it’s a good thing I cleaned up. She will need the room for the new mess she will make when she gets here.

    We’re ready for you mommy.

    Keeping it Lazy,

    TH and Co.
