  1. How to Landscape Your Front Lawn

Add some mud, lawn seed and water - and a lot of hope.

    I hate, hate, hate gardening.

I’ll push a mower around and get out the Weed Wacker so the city doesn’t send a bill, but that’s pretty much where it ends.

    BW had me gardening today.

Photo by Paul Moody on Unsplash

I had a very good excuse why I couldn’t do any lawn care or landscaping until now: I was waiting for the plumber service to get rid of the big piles of dirt on our front lawn:

stay out of the dirt pile, I said.

The child loved loved loved the dirt pile.

There were actual tears today for the dirt pile when she realized it was gone.

The plumbers finally came and re-landscaped the front lawn so there’s no big piles of dirt on the front lawn and they smoothed things over and threw some grass seed down and booked it out of here. I have my doubts that the grass seed will take, but now I have become that crazy old man know as the lawn guy who’s out standing and watering his dirt pile and watching for any signs of life from the 3 seeds that remain on the dirt after the neighborhood birds have eaten the rest.

I had outsourced the work because there’s not one but two big honking piles of dirt and I don’t own a backhoe so when we signed up to have our sewer replaced and we signed up for the landscaper service to flatten out the dirt pile and seed.

This is where it gets kind of funny, well - not funny - more ridiculous. As I write this there’s a 2 foot pipe sticking up above the lawn that I assumed they would cut down when they landscaped so that the vent is flush with the ground.

    I assumed wrong.

    That’s not the landscaper’s job.

They’re actually going to send another guy out to cut off 2 feet of plastic pipe so it’s flush with the ground. Whatever, I guess but it seems like a waste of effort. They had people here I assumed they would take care of it while they were there.

So, our front lawn is now flat, but muddy and no signs of grass yet.

If that wasn’t enough for me for one day today I also installed some new landscape bricks (actually plastic bricks) as our previous - also plastic - bricks were dug up by the plumbers and they were old and needed to be replaced anyway.

These were actually pretty easy to install. BW found them on the internet and if you only have one eye like I do they look like bricks from far away which is about as close as anybody other than the Amazon delivery guy gets anyway.

    Before:

    I’ve got this

    After:

    eh. straight enough.

    watering the dirt.

As one can imagine, this pretty much took all afternoon, but I was not done yet.

I had to take the child to the dentist.

Want to know what’s worse than going to your dentist. Taking your child that’s afraid of even the tiniest attention paid to her teeth. These dentists for kids are good and know all the tricks with the mirror and the brushes but it’s still a struggle. A struggle I wasn’t looking forward to one bit.

As I am standing in line waiting to pick up the child at the school - my phone rings and it’s the dentist. All the dental techs are down with the stomach bug so they have to reschedule.

Great. We don’t have to go, right?

The problem was I spent all week working the child up that we’re going and she better get her mind wrapped around this idea and if all goes well there might be a happy meal in her future.

Change! I want to go to the dentist!

Actual tears about not being able to go to the dentist. Go figure.

But, we got over it and as it’s the last sunny day for the next seven or so here we took the opportunity to go to the park on the swings:

and if getting to go to the park instead of the dentist wasn’t enough fun, we also found a mother bird sitting on her eggs in a nest:

this is zoomed in. We kept our distance.

Not only did we get to go to the park we got to see a bird on a nest taking care of her soon-to-be young.

The child named the bird “warmy”, because the mother bird was keeping the eggs warm.

Back home we go and we’re done, yes?

    Oh. No.

While were gone at the park, BW moved the sprinkler from my lawn seeds and I’m pretty sure this is one of the original sins - my grass seeds!

The moved sprinkler now sprayed in part over the driveway.

Want to know who loved, loved the sprinkler? I bet you can guess.

She squealed and squeaked with joy as she scootered under the sprinkler on repeat. It wasn’t sprinkler running weather here and we warned her, but she doesn’t care.

She was an ice cube when she finally came in and we pointed her towards a warm shower and I think if I had my druthers I could have put her to bed right then. It was early, but she had the post-shower tired feeling and I thought she might just go to bed early.

    I can dream.

I tossed some chicken on the grill and I look up and she’s in the knee-high grass in the backyard with the dog and the dog has found my gardening glove and is trying to eat it. I have to leave my grill to chase a dog around the yard for some half-eaten work glove.

    This is my life.

I won’t bore you with the rest of the routine other than to tell you it took me at least four times to get her to go to bed tonight.

“No, you can’t sleep in the hallway. You have a bed”, I tell her.

Finally. Child is asleep, lawn has been cared for as much as it’s getting and we witnessed some nature at the park instead of going to go to the dentist.

It’s 9:11 pm as I write this and I think she’s finally out.

Tomorrow, she has a doctor’s appointment at 8am, so I am sure it will be an easy morning getting her out the door in time tomorrow morning.

    Right?

    Keep watering,

    TH and Co.

  2. Getting the Balance Right

From Small Steps to a Big Girl Scooter. Pink Streamers are Standard Equipment

This took us a while to get here.

Just look at that concentration. Pink streamers help too.

She clung to her 3 wheeled scooter for far too long, but she didn’t want to use this one because: balancing is hard.

    New is hard.

The 3 wheels are easy. One foot on the board, and then you push and because there’s 2 wheels on the front it’s easy to balance and steer. She had the 3-wheeler figured out without a problem.

2 wheels were scary. 2 wheels were hard to use and hard to balance. 3 wheels were comfortable. We tried to get her to get on this scooter last year. I even bought her a brand name one so she didn’t have to learn on some piece of junk to learn on.

Last year she would have absolutely nothing to do with scooter. “It’s too scary”, she said. Everything was too scary.

But this year, she has friends. Friends that have 2 wheel scooters. She has to keep up with the Jones’s. Literally. Keep Up. She has to be able to scoot along with her friends if she wants to be included in the summer fun this summer.

This is What Progress Looks like

After dinner we were outside in the garden preparing for frost tonight by covering up our most delicate plants:

It’s going to be frosty tonight.

I suggested she get out the yet to be used razor scooter instead of the three wheeler and lo and behold she did not reject this idea. After a quick demonstration on how it’s different than her old scooter she had it figured out in no time.

This one has a bell and streamers. That pretty much sealed the deal.

“I’m balancing” she squealed as she cautiously glided up the driveway.

“Yes, you are ” I said as I quickly snapped the photo you see above.

“I love balancing”she said to me as we went inside for the night.

“That’s great”, I told her as I picked up the scooter and shooed her inside to go to bed.

“Let’s go, the scooter will be there tomorrow. It’s getting dark and it’s time for bed.”

  3. On Going to Buy Milk at 7-11

For you, it’s just a chore. For them, it’s an adventure that’s open 24 hours.

“Don’t forget milk on the way home from swimming”, BW said to me.

    And off we went swimming.

Ah, Swimming. This is a 30 minute activity that somehow takes up the entire morning:

8:45: We had better think about getting going.

    9:00: Nothing has happened

9:10: 20 minutes to go. Snacks have been packed for the 15 minute car ride.

9:15: “Has Anybody seen her bathing suit”?

9:20: Child has a bathing suit on and I have laid out clothes for her to put on.

9:25: Child has shorts and a tank top on. This is not the outfit I laid out as it’s 55 degrees out.

9:30: We need to leave NOW. Let’s GO.

9:40: Somehow we’re on the road and there’s popcorn crunching going on in the back seat.

I love, love, love when BW takes her to swimming lessons.

Anyway, back to the milk and 7-11.

We’ve all been to 7-11. Heck, I am ashamed to say that in my youth I have even eaten at a 7-11 in times of need and desperation.

This was not one of those times. We just needed milk, and for me it was just another chore of the day to day and I was barely thinking about getting the milk or the store because I just want to get milk and get out.

But when you’re six, the 7-11 is magic.

We were in there for the time it took me to go to the back of the store and grab a quart of milk and walk to the front.

I paid no attention to much else. Milk and Get out. That’s all I wanted.

To her though, the 7-11 is magical. It got pointed out to me that they have soup, and also Sprite (nice try, kid) and holy moly! Just look at the size of that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup - “that’s bigger than the one I got at Easter - right dad?”

    Yes, yes it is.

We manage to get out of the seven eleven by some sulky teen that says to me “have a nice day” with about as little sincerity as humanly possible. She looked even less excited about the whole 7-11 experience than I was.

We get out of the store and to the car with just milk.

This should be an Olympic sport: Get a kid out of the back seat of a car, without dinging the door of the car parked next to you and into a 7-11 and out again and buckled in in record time with just the thing you went in for. Extra points if it’s raining or snowing out.

We are in the car and pulling out of the parking lot when she sees the sign for the 1 dollar big gulp.

There’s another thing I haven’t had in ages. She asks what it is, and I tell her it’s too much soda pop that any one person should have at one time.

“I want one”, she tells me. Of course she does.

“I bet you do - but not today” I tell her. “You have had ice cream 3 times this week”

“But, I promise you - sometime this summer, we will go and get a big gulp”.

Because nothing says summer like drinking a big gulp on a hot summers’ day.

  4. This Making Money Online with Substack is Not Going Well

Buy my master-class so I can redeem myself.

    Oh. the dream.

Photo by Josh Appel on Unsplash | This photo of coins is more representative of my current earnings.

Write about stuff about our interesting (boring) lives and make a living. Substack says I can, and if it’s on the internet it must be true, yes?

I would guess hundreds of gurus here would be happy to sell me a mini course to make more money online and turn my writing into cash. It has to be easy if so many are telling me it is.

All I have to do is call the number on my screen and not only will I get immediate access to all their resources - I will also get a free set of kitchen knives if I place my order now.

Trouble is - even if I could pay money (and I have in the past), they are all garbage and all of them just want to sell you the dream. My favorite is when all the dream sellers team up and leave ‘testimonials’ for each other when it’s really all smoke and mirrors for the most part.

I’m not buying it. Especially at $497.00.

    Anyway…

My current paid subscriber list is:

    1. My mother in law
    2. My father in law
    3. My mother in law’s friend

That’s not a big list but I do make six bucks a month which is not a whole lot of money but I am very happy that I am getting paid to write this and I cannot stress enough - this is great.

    Here’s the problem:

I am currently running at a negative balance.

I make six bucks a month total from my 3 subscribers.

I thought I made an additional $9.00 or so from affiliate sales with Amazon from the odd thing I link to to. Earlier this month somebody bought a Roomba and I made eight bucks. Yay, right? Not a fortune, but 15 bucks a month for playing around on the internet is still a pretty good deal. I think.

That was, until the Roomba Got Returned.

Now I am underwater with Amazon:

    I owe Jeff 8 bucks.

I’m not good at math but even if you add the six bucks I make with subscriptions, I am still underwater $1.84

Maybe I could start a new master-class on how to lose money writing.

I could sell it for $7.84. If I sold one, I break even and I’m back up to zero and If I sold 2 then I would be ahead of the game.

    Three? That’s just dreaming.

Alas, I have no masterclass to sell.

Instead I am offering you this free life lesson:

Don’t count your chickens before the return window has closed.

    Until Next Time,

  5. The Fun Run was Fun in the Sun

A kindergarten level headline for a kindergarten fun run (in the Sun)

    See Child Run.

    Child Runs

    Child has some fun

    Dad has some fun

    Mom has some fun

Mom, Dad and Child have had too much sun.

    Run Child, Run!

If you haven’t already guessed was the Apex Fun Run at her school. I have never heard of Apex until the child came home with stuff from school, but it’s fund raising with sweaty little runners that can barely read, but boy can they run.

All week this Apex thing has been teaching the kids respect and the like so I can’t say it’s a bad thing but I still find the whole system kind of iffy that you have to rely on your child to get sponsors for their education. I am told this is how things are done and I just have to deal so I am dealing.

Besides, this was about the kids and the kids absolutely loved it to death. They ran and ran and ran some more through pylons and under big tunnels and when all was said and done - in about a half hour the kids ran 36 laps.

Thirty-Six! These laps were not the size of a kiddie pool. These were serious sized laps that I bet not many adults watching would be able to run - including yours truly.

She had a great time and a few family members committed to 2 dollars a lap because really, how many laps can a six-year-old run?

It seems 36 of them is the answer and imagine their surprise when the credit card bill gets dinged for $72.00. I thought BW was overspending at $50 but apparently not.

The run itself was well done and well planned and the kiddos ran and ran and ran and ran and then when you think they could not run any more - they ran some more. They all looked like a hot mess when they were done. I didn’t see any more prizes or awards but then they might still show up next week.

Because BW and I will take every opportunity to embarrass our daughter, we brought along a plastic stadium horn to cheer her on.

    Something like this:

    Buy your very own here

We thought it was a great idea and we had a blast cheering her on and encouraging her to keep going. But apparently some of the other parents there did not appreciate our silliness and complained about the horn. Karens are everywhere it seems.

I don’t see what the problem was. I was the only Dad playing air guitar with the horn while I cheered my kiddo on because that’s why we are there - to have fun and celebrate the great work the kids did and believe me, they did all the work.

Me? I just tooted my own horn.
