  1. For Goodness Sake, Go Outside!

Today it was 70 degrees here. In March.

    Yes, March

Usually, March is a little more, um…seasonal:

    when will it end?

Today when the child came home from school, the bus dropped her off and about 3 seconds later her friend Ethel was over here.

Did they want to go to the Park?

    How about ride bikes?

    Play Basketball?

    Nope, Nope and Nope.

They both wanted to come inside and watch YouTube kids on the tablet.

BW obviously said, NO. Under no circumstances. Go play outside and don’t come back until dinner. Go play and pretend it’s any time before 2008, when we didn’t have tablets.

About an hour and a half later the child came back exhausted. All played out.

She did what we all want to do on a Friday night:

Flop on the couch and find something to watch.

    Also, Pizza.

  2. Video Killed the Radio Star

“What can I do?” she asked after dinner.

She wanted to go outside and play as the weather was warmish but it was getting later and she needed a bath and she had been up since 6am (ask me how I know)

So, I suggested that she go downstairs into the family room and clean up the big mess she made because if you don’t, Dad is going to start donating stuff to the garbageman.

She went downstairs, and then five minutes later came back with her little digital camera and starts to show me what I thought were photos at first.

    say cheese!

But I was quickly corrected: “Dad, it’s a video!”.

I absentmindedly replied that her job was to clean the family room of her toys and not make videos.

She was quick to correct me that she indeed was cleaning the family room and as proof, she recorded a video with her little camera.

“Look!” she said as she handed me the camera

And lo and behold: a very fuzzy video from an ant’s perspective of her little socked feet bouncing around and picking up toys. It’s a miracle, and I have this on video

I would share the video but it’s late and takes way too many steps to get it from the internals of her camera to here in your email so you’re just going to have to use your imagination.

    This got me thinking:

She’s of the “YouTube Generation”. Yes, I know millennials will say that they are, but they were born late ’90’s to early 2000’s. Computers were still beige and big and ugly then. They may have caught up in their later years but these little ones were watching videos on a screen before their first birthday cake and they haven’t stopped since.

Video is second nature to these kids.

Video is normal and electronics are normal to them.

Her favorite toys are the tablet and this camera. She likes the camera because on school nights she’s not allowed the tablet, but nobody said anything about no camera so she’s figured this out and is now creating videos and photos and playing games on this cheap digital camera from China (now with extra tarriffs!)

She solved a lot of problems tonight:

    1. She turned a chore of cleaning into a fun thing.
    2. This showed me she can behave and listen
    3. She figured a way around the “no tablet rule”

    That’s my Girl. Good Job!

  3. A Post about Socks

We have large bin in the basement full to the brim of too small, too dirty andtoo little socks.

And every week I do the impossible: Try to the match them up.

I know a few get lost through no fault of ours and I can, and will – blame the dog for some of the single sock situation I find myself in. Not all – but definitely some.

The wee one seems to go through socks at such a clip and there’s a trinity of reasons for this:

    1. Growth.
    2. Natural Causes. aka: they went through the dog.
    3. Actual wear and tear.

But if there’s a single sock at the end of the week you must hang on to it as if it’s the last piece of pie in the pan, because you never know: the missing sock might come back next week.

Spoiler Alert: The socks never never come back.

Every week I am going through the same pile week after week trying in vain to get just one match. If you thought dating was hard…just wait until you’re married with different colors and sizes of socks to match.

I’m writing about socks because god knows what else I could write about, but also that BW bought some new socks for the child, and I found them on the kitchen table.

First, socks should not be on a kitchen table, and second I had to rescue them and match them in pairs and get this: put them away. NOW – before they get lost.

Of course, before I put the new ones in the drawer I routed through the drawer for some old stragglers that might be stuffed in corners and I found a few that might have fit a few years ago but they no longer fit anybody here anymore.

So, I pitched them. Our mornings are stressful enough with all the don’t miss the bus stress, we do not need to add to it by thinking there’s got to be another sock in the drawer that matches the one pink polka dot one with unicorns that I have in my hand.

    There isn’t.

BW hates that I pitch socks.

I give them a few weeks to show up and if they haven’t I figure they must have found a nicer home so I may as well pitch them. It’s not like they are going to come back. If by the time laundry load number 20 comes around and I haven’t seen the match show up I am going to claim the sock as MIA and give the other the burial it deserves.

It’s the right thing to do.

This is why I love new sock day. All the socks are clean, and organized and put away ready to start the day. And then two weeks later one will be in the mismatched sock tub and we will be asking ourselves again:

    HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN?

Folks, I think I may have figured it out. I’m blaming the leprechauns:

It’s the only thing I can think of that makes any sense.

  4. A Tale of Two Uber Rides

Yesterday both BW and I had eye doctor appointments an hour apart from each other and considering that we both might be in no shape to drive to and from we decided taking an Uber would be the best.

I don’t take a lot of Ubers because I drive Uber. But today I was a passenger two times and it was an eye-opening experience!

    Ride Number One

First, the cost: $33.00 to go on a 15 minute trip. I know for a fact that my driver might have seen about 12 bucks – at most, for this trip as it was a reserved ride because we wanted to get there and they usually pay a bit more.

The driver showed up in a Big Blue RAM 1500 Pickup Truck. Average mileage of 15MPG from my googling skills.

Now, it was a nice ride in a very roomy nice truck driven by a retired nurse so we have no complaints about the truck or the ride. It was nice, we tipped at the end of the ride.

But I wonder how she was making any money? I’m guessing that it cost her $2.00 just in gas for the 15 minute trip. If she’s paying that much for gas for a fifteen minute trip it could cost her $8.00 an hour just in gas to work for Uber.

Maybe it’s to pay for the truck payment and it’s just a part time thing? I dunno but I doubt that we were very profitable for her.

    Ride Number 2

I have to preface this with the fact that I just got out of the ophthalmologist office after having a needle in my eye so my mood was not the best and as luck would have it, I am pretty sure we got the dirtiest Uber in the area.

This car was filthy. I don’t think the interior was cleaned in years. But that’s what the Uber gods decided was an acceptable ride and I just wanted to get home so whatever.

This poor clapped out and rusty Jeep Renegade could not have passed inspection in the past decade legally if I had to guess. It was rough. And then to make matters worse he takes the longer way home. I dunno if this was a technique to rack up the mileage but whatever, I just wanted to get home and liedown because I just had a needle in my eye.

The driving was fine and the driver was nice enough and so everybody gets five stars but holy that was an uber experience I don’t want to have again.

If nothing else, this makes me feel better about the current state of my car. The mats are a little salty and need a good power wash but otherwise I keep the car clean. I’ve had compliments, and I didn’t think my car was that clean.

Now I know how low the bar can get.

I really don’t know how people can take Ubers on the regular and afford it. It may have been cheap at the start but not so anymore.

And here I am thinking eggs were expensive.

PS. When she saw the leprechaun surprise of the day this morning she took one look at it and said:

    That’s quite impressive!

  5. The Return of Peppa Pig

I got a needle in my eye today and it hurts something fierce so this will be a really short one today as I can barely see.

We’re still at it with the leprechauns here and this is tonight’s effort:

    Let’s go swimming mommy!

Those Leprechauns are so, so sneaky that they had a swim party with Peppa Pig and even turned the water green!

I hope when she sees this she squeals with joy!

    See you tomorrow.
