  1. The First

Resolutions are for the over achievers. We’re just trying to be the best we can here.

Every time I have tried to be better on a timeline, it does not work for me. I just get fatter, or sadder or some other -er which just adds to failure. Absolute failure.

Rich-er would be nice, but I don’t think you join a Gym for that.

So instead of trying to get skinny or make more money or read a book I will just share what happened today and maybe we can get better tomorrow and take it from there

    Today’s Firsts of 2025

    1. Meltdown. The child has a bit of sensitivity to getting hair combed and nails trimmed. She’s always had this and it was time to trim her toenails. Cue the screaming. It took me 3 times at least of idle threats and other useless attempts to get her toes trimmed. We got there, but holy. BW and I will both be happy when she’s in control of her beauty. We might never get into the bathroom again when that happens, but we will cross that bridge later.
    2. Friends over to play. Even though we’ve been home for 10 days with the child we didn’t have her friends over until today. They came, painted on our walls and ate our food and watched our TV. My child had some entertainment which is great because school starts tomorrow, thank god.
    3. Nap. I made breakfast this morning. That was hard work. I needed a nap after.
    4. Leftovers. Guess what’s for dinner the day after new years? New year’s eve leftovers – that’s what.
    5. Waffles for Breakfast. Obviously I’m not starting any diet on the first day of the year this year.
    6. Painting. BW Painted a Flamingo.
    7. Christmas Decoration Removal. I thought I had taken them all down and I had not.
    8. Writing I am still at it here, which is kind of amazing. Maybe I should take up running after all.

I hope for less meltdowns and more naps this year personally. And maybe, if I am really ~~good~~ lucky I’ll find a few more readers this year.

    Happy New Year!

  2. Year in Review

We made it. 2024 is behind us so I thought I would take a moment to look back on the year that was.

I guess the first thing to note is that I have gotten into the habit of writing every day. Some posts are better than others but I haven’t missed a day since her first day of kindergarten.

    2024 Highlights

I went to Argentina for the first time. I also had my first alcoholic drink in 25 years. BW is a bad influence on me.

Leprechauns were big this year. Too big, as I had to find a new trick that would do overnight for like two weeks. I am not looking forward to March 2025.

We had both kindergarten training and then of course, the real thing. Hard to believe she’s halfway through the school year.

Our basement flooded and we had to have new sewage lines installed and then my man bathroom/office renovated.

The Child has stated she wants to change religions . Hey, whatever.

She was brave and went and go her own breakfast.

She fell off the playground slide. I didn’t know I could get to the hospital so fast.

We Made a TV. It wasn’t flat screen.

If you listen to Dad, good things happen. One day she will learn.

We went to Disney On Ice. And I had an 8 dollar Coke.

I’ve been driving an electric car for over a year. I’m never going to get an ICE car again.

Things got a bit messy here from time to time.

We had an online house tour. You don’t want to miss this.

I went to Texas and listened to a lot of headphones.

We thought about moving to Canada – Because: Don

We had our annual Pumpkin Smashing. It’s our favorite time of the year.

The Tent we bought years ago finally saw some use. It’s about time.

I heard a lot of No’s this year come out of her. This, we have to work on still.

I taught her about trademarks. I think.

I had just a taste of the bachelor life. I’m not sure I like it any more.

Paw Patrol is Out and My Little Ponies are IN. Well…duh, Dad.

OMG the accent. It could be worse I suppose.

Crafts were pretty big this year.. I have the glitter in my hair to prove it.

We’ve all come a long way this year, I have taken to writing this blog/newsletter/whatever you want to call it and since the first day of school I have managed to find the time and more importantly – the energy to write here every day.

BW is crafty this year. Very crafty

The Child? Well…we’re getting there. She’s easier than she was a year ago. We still have our moments but for the most of she’s really good and we are both glad to have her here. It would be real quiet if I didn’t have these two with me. I’m a very lucky guy

We watch a ball drop and that’s it? Yup.

    See you next year,

    TH and Co.

  3. The Potty Song

Sunday night is bath night here. She’s SO going to daycare tomorrow and she needs to be at least clean-ish before she goes.

I started to give the tub a quick wipe before she hopped in as there’s no sense tossing her in a yucky tub. Then when she’s in the tub she wants me to hang around and talk to her so that’s when I clean the rest of the bathroom. It makes easy work of a crappy job.

Underneath all the flotsam and stuff that covers our sink area was a small piece of paper.

Folks, I present to you: The Potty Song

Cover with Title. In case you didn’t know what this is.

The Lyrics need some work. I am hoping this is a first draft

    The lyrics read:

    No Potty, No Potty
    Let’s Go Potty
    I Love You Potty

I’m not sure what to think about this.

First, we are going through paper and crayons at an unbelievable clip and then there’s the crayon situation. The crayons get left lying around and then the dog eats them. So far the dog is still with us.

Then there’s the fact that this song exists. I know there’s singing in the shower and that’s a thing, but I don’t usally write down the lyrics before I hop in. And I don’t know about you readers, but when I am on the potty I am not singing – that’s for sure.

She told me today that if I do go potty I need to sing the song.

Most days I need to sing another song when on the potty:

    Keep Singing, or…never mind.

  4. Play Doh and Pizza

    5:50am

    “Wake up Dad”

I open my one good eye and give her the stink eye and tell her to go back to bed. It’s not even 6am.

She wants a hug. I get up and hug and tuck.

I go back to bed and then 20 minutes it happens again!

This time I surrender and let her crawl in to bed with me. Maybe I can get another 20 minutes (spoiler: I don’t)

I tried to get her to go down and watch cartoons on the tablet, but there were tears about how she doesn’t like her new tablet because it’s blue and she wants her old tablet back. I tell her that’s not happening and she has to “suffer” and deal with the new tablet, my entitled child.

She’s in bef talking like she’s not sick at all (she still is a tad) and that I should get up and play with her. I’m thinking coffee and she’s thinking my little pony.

OK, OK – I am getting up. If you’ve ever spent any time in bed with a child you know that you never get any sleep and just get kicked a lot anyway so I may as well get up.

We go downstairs and after I get my coffee she realizes she has a brand new My Little Pony still in the box from Christmas. This, folks – is when you know the kid got too much stuff.

New my little pony gets unwrapped and then she’s getting the jewels for the crown and combing the hair and then she tells me that she’s all about my little ponies now (told ya so) and that she doesn’t want all her paw patrol stuff (for the most part – there were a few we decided to keep)

OKAY-THEN! I get right up and pull every little paw patrol item and put them all in little baggies. While I am at it, I might as well um..edit the toy box. I did ask her about every item if she wanted it still and I did not throw out anything that she wanted but there were a few things in there for when she was an infant and she no longer played with or wanted. Goodbye Paw Patrol!

BW posted them on the facebooks and they were picked up in no time. It seemed a shame to toss them.

I then looked at the clock: 8:00 am

Are you effing kidding me? I have been awake for so long and have her entire toy box and play area organized and now you tell me that I still have the entire day still in front of me and it’s not even 9am? Hoo Boy.

This is a lot better. I could not get the top to close before the purge.

After my 2nd coffee I found the child and we then started one of many activities:

We have painted and play-dohed and played with slime and god knows what else.

My fvorite was when we played pizzeria. She was the pizza maker and I ordered. So I ordered a large pepperoni pizza and then she comes to the door and hands me this:

then I opened the box and was greeted with this:

This is just like the pizzas I order in real life! They get smaller and smaller every year but cost more and more. They skimp on the toppings and when it arrives it’s cold. Lastly, it’s $40 and up now for a medium pie.

    So. Yeah. Play Doh Pizza.

We also made green slime and painted and painted and painted. There’s been lots of painting happening today, but somewhere in there I managed to sneak in a half an hour nap while she was watching the tablet she didn’t want anything to do with this morning.

By the time dinnertime arrived she was pretty much beat. She was warmish to the touch all day and the last time I checked she was 94 degrees, so just a tad warmer than she should be.

Hopefully tomorrow she will feel better. (and sleep in a bit, please)
