  1. Go Fly a Kite

    Today, we flew a kite.

The weather finally perked up a bit to the mid 50’s and compared to yesterday it was balmy - so we’re taking it - and when she got home from the last day at the zoo she wanted to fly a kite.

    Dad? he wanted a nap.

We flew a kite. No nap for Dad.

And then after dinner we had ice cream.

    Kites and ice cream.

Not bad for a Wednesday in April.

  2. Today I Watched a Gorilla Poop

It was the last thing she said to me, the gorilla poop thing.

Today was day 2 at at the zoo and today she told me the most interesting thing as the last thing. Today’s theme was offense and defense between animals she told us at the dinner table tonight.

Also, she touched a bear claw, a lynx and a snake.

Also, the noodles for lunch were much better than the soggy bread yesterday because that was “so disgusting”!

    All this was good.

Not so good - the weather here. It was a balmy 29 degrees this morning, which is not a problem for us but it was for the child. To her, it’s spring and the whole lion/lamb thing was in March - now it’s after easter and it should be warmer - but it’s not.

She would not would not wear anything warm. I tried to stuff an extra hoodie in the bag. “It’s to heavy”, she cried. I managed to get her some mittens and that seemed to be good compromise for her. Not me - I would have bundled her up more tightly.

She eventually went out the door in a t-shirt, hoodie over top and soft and fluffy spring jacket. We must have asked her if she was sure a thousand times.

“I’m fine” she kept telling us.

So… I warned her and dropped her off partially expecting a phone call an hour later saying come pick her up, but our headstrong (or exeptionally warm blooded) child spent all day at the camp and came back to me unzipped and bedraggled from a very hard day at the zoo watching monkeys poo.

Fun fact: Did you know what a Skink is? Yeah, me either.

    Today I learned from a 7-year-old.

Some of the information was too much.

  3. OMG You Guys, So Tired

If I have one more early start with an excited child at the edge of my bed…

BW and I are at the kitchen table tonight, asking ourselves why are we so tired?

Then it dawns us - Easter lasted 3 days here.

Day 1. Easter Dinner in Canada = excited child at edge of bed at 6am
Day 2. The Easter Bunny Came = super-excited child at edge of bed at 5am.
Day 3. The first day of Zoo Camp = super-excited child at edge of bed at 6am

    That explains it.

this is what she wanted to do all week on spring break. I love the field of view.

This morning was the first day of spring break so the options were to listen to some kid explain minecraft moves in the most annoying voice over tinny tablet speakers for a week straight - or send the child to camp and get her out of the house and touching grass (and snakes, and bunnies too apparently)

    We chose the grass option.

    Zoo crafts came home.

She came home with stories about how her bread was soggy on her sandwich BW made her and it was “disgusting” and also a leaky water bottle and wet pants and wet artwork as you can see above.

But despite the water incident and the less than desirable lunch she had a fantastic time and told us how she touched a snake, a cheetah skin and other such zoo-like activities that did not require minecraft.

Personally, I don’t know how she’s been functioning on so little sleep. It’s 9:30 pm and she just came downstairs to show me how her PJ’s glow in the dark. I told her she’s going to see her old man glow in the dark if she doesn’t go to bed right now.

I was thinking just the other day how we’ve got the bedtimes sorted out here but it turns out I was wrong in so many ways because as it stands right now a good night’s sleep for anybody in the house is just a dream.

  4. The Easter Bunny Starts Really Early

I don’t know when she got to bed exactly. 10ish, maybe?

    self portrait.

I blame the nap in the car on the way home from celebrating Easter a day early with family. It wasn’t much of a nap but it was enough for the chocolate and sweets and excitement to kick in all over again.

So yeah, it was late. We even tried to do the trick where BW would “pretend” to go to bed because if we’re all in be then the easter bunny would come faster. I told the child that I wasn’t going to bed yet because I had some stuff to do but BW went with it and big surprise - fell asleep.

I am the Easter Bunny. BW had it all together and I just put it on the kitchen table and sprinkled some eggs around the living room - after I put the dog in her crate for the night - otherwise there would not be any eggs to find.

So, yea. Late night but we did it.

At 5ish am, I hear the familiar “Hi Dad” as she crawls into bed with me excited as can be - but she knows the rule - easter starts at 6am here. No earlier.

I continued to watch the insides of my eyelids and she watched the clock and waited patiently. I have to hand it to her. She just lay there and waited until it was right at 6am and then we went to go see what the easter bunny brought.

She got stuff. Some chocolate, some small toys and some clothes.

    6:05am - “I’m bored”, she tells me.

I tell her to say hello to YouTube Kids and I go back to say hello to my bed so I can start the day over.

And that folks- was our Easter. I went out and ubere-d a bit, and the ladies stayed home and watched TV and videos and the child stayed in her PJ’s all day. It was that kind of day.

Tomorrow is the real challenge: The first day of spring break. Stay tuned.. this should be a good week.:)

Here’s hoping all your chocolate this year was the good kind.:)

    Until next time,

  5. The Easter Bunny Says I Have To Go To Bed

This will be a very short one tonight folks because I was told I was to go to bed immediately or the Easter Bunny won’t come. I told the child this does not apply to Dads, and it’s only for little girls - but she’s not buying it, so I’m off to pretend to go to bed and then get up and sprinkle eggs around the house once she’s gone to sleep.

Considering she’s been out of bed about a million times tonight I told her I would go to bed as soon as I wrote this post - so here we are.

Easter 2026: We are ready for you Bunny.

Bring it. But not before 6am. That’s the rule here.

    Happy Easter,

    TH and Co.
